I was wondering today how my clients would describe me in one word. In a small group that I am a part of, a friend of mine asked each of us to write one word to describe us. She then took photos of our hands. I'm not sure what she is doing with it but she is a talented artist so I'm sure it will be interesting when she is done.
My word was "hyperactive". To this group of folks I hang out with it makes sense to them. For me, it makes sense to me as well. I get a lot of things going and am challenged to stay on task, I may even be a little ADHD.
But I doubt that many of my clients that don't know me personally might describe me that way. I had a client today and while I wouldn't say she is hyperactive she is definitely high energy. When she sits down she rapidly tells me all that has been going on. She stays very busy with work, with long hours, and this weekend her son is getting married. As she spoke with me I wondered whether she is like this at home.
With someone like this I get tired at times just listening to their life. I have to put on my "calm" hat. If I were to be hyperactive there would be so much energy the roof would blow off of the house. In fact, I wonder if I might be a little hyperactive away from the massage table because I intentionally have to tone it down with the majority of my clients.
Life from the Massage Table
December of 2011 will mark ten years since I graduated from massage school and became a "professional" in the business. Many experiences have accumulated in that time and even before. Some funny, some sad, some inspiring and many that are just plain interesting. Perhaps other therapists can identify with my experiences. I've created this blog as a way to anonymously share life from the massage table. All names have been changed to maintain client confidentiality. Enjoy!

Massage Therapy Awareness Week
I've never really gotten on board with Massage Therapy Awareness Week which is sponsored by the AMTA. However, this year I got a mailer from Have a Better Life. They just ended a promotion printing T-shirts. The price was great at $9.95 a shirt with free shipping and logo printing on the back. I ordered 40 of them, half of which I'll give away during Massage Therapy Awareness Week and the rest I'll let my clients purchase.
Why a blog, why now, why bother?
As I write this I realize that nobody will be reading this entry. It's an anonymous blog, how do I promote an anonymous blog? But it has been a transitional week. My spouse and child are back in school. My practice is busy and I have had some challenges this week; nothing earth shattering but just some annoying issues. And there have been enough annoying issues that I really have to ground myself to work with clients so that I'm not transferring my challenges onto them.
Being able to journal and put my thoughts into words has always been therapeutic for me. For the most part over many years it was in a personal journal that nobody will ever see. But in this business there are so many stories that come my way. Many are inspiring that nudge me to go out and shout in the street about how wonderful a client is! Many deserve to be shared beyond my selfish world; however it needs to happen anonymously to protect client confidentiality.
So here is the first entry that nobody may ever read. If you've stumbled upon this and find it helpful, amusing, interesting or just plain wacky and want to share it with someone feel free to do so. Otherwise, I'll just be sitting here in my office typing to myself!
Blessings in good health! Enjoy the day!
